When you’re planning the content for your website, first you need to determine:

  1. What is the purpose of your website?

  2. Who is your target audience, including age group, sex, occupation, location, interests?

  3. What are your products or services?

  4. How do your products or services solve a problem for your target audience?

  5. How does your target audience benefit from using your products or services?

Define Your Website Goals Clearly

A website can only generate traffic, leads, and sales when we deliver what our target audience wants. That is why defining your goals for your website is so important. If your goals don’t align with the website, then you won’t be able to deliver what your target audience wants which will result in no leads and no sales. It’s discouraging to invest time and money into a website only to learn that no one wants or understands why they should buy from you.

Build the Trust of Your Audience

Know your audience and what inspires and/or motivates them. Be clear and transparent in what you offer and what action you want your audience to take. Make sure your website connects with your audience emotionally and has the credibility needed to earn their trust and inspire them to be your customer. Visitors want to know who they are doing business with, not that you’re just another website in cyber space. Put names, your own pictures, or a story on your website to tell your audience what you are about. Your clients or customers need to know your intentions. Use actual pictures of your business instead of source pictures to represent the uniqueness of your business.

How Are You Different from Your Competition?

Differentiation from your competitors is key. On your website, use a customized design with colors, images, font styles, special effects and styles tailored to your brand, so you stand out. This also builds trust from your website visitors. When you tell your story and create information on price, quality, service, etc. you will stand out from the rest of websites selling the same products or services.

Focus on Website User Experience

Fast load times and user-friendly navigation for your website visitors make it easy to get to the content they want. If you have products or services, make sure that users can get to the desired page with the fewest clicks possible. In addition to having an intuitive user-friendly main menu navigation which is optimized for desktops and all modern mobile devices, think about the use and placement of your call-to-action buttons, search box, etc. so visitors can easily get to your popular content. Don’t make them click more than absolutely necessary.

Remember the Fundamentals of SEO

This seems like a basic thing, but don’t forget about SEO. Keywords and key phrases are a major factor in SEO. Adding new content is also a factor and the best way to do this is to write a blog. Set a schedule to write blogs at least 2 or even 3 times a month. Understand how search engines crawl and index your content and ensure you have the basic on-page factors optimized. SEO also has many technical aspects that go beyond on-page optimization so you must ensure that your website can be crawled and indexed. Always keep SEO in mind, with your website whether adding a new feature, writing content, or changing your site navigation.

Learn from Your Website Analytics

You must go beyond just installing Google Analytics and connecting Google Search Console on your website. You need information on website demographics, top content, top keywords and key phrases, search trends, and more. This requires that you set up some reports and alerts, so you have to know what is working and what isn’t. You can then adjust or fix errors immediately rather than reacting when it is too late.

Continue to Listen and Learn

Always make changes to website to keep it working in response to your audience. Listen to your target audience and learn. This can be done through social media, customer service channels, website analytics, or any communications that you have with your website visitors and customers. Be pro-active in seeking feedback and ways to improve so your website and listen.
